signs of the miserable times
~
Say mistress - a penny to spare?
I’ve been hungry since the day I could cry out.
I suppose that was when I was born.
Oh that my mother, bless her unknown soul,
Strangled me unknowingly within her womb
To bless me with the ignorance of this cruel, horrible world!
I hear a Word used by a Scholar yesterday
And as I deigned to know, nay needed to know
For I did not, nay, could not know it,
I went up and asked him what It meant.
He, (most kind sir may God bless you with many fruitful years!)
well, He stopped, and did not push me away,
Neither did he kick me, or spit at me, which is only my like’s due.
He answered me! And I was content.
The word was apt, appropriate.
It described the world as it seemed to me, to a T.
The word was consummate, heaven-sent.
The Word, dear sirs, was “INDIFFERENT.”
